Impact
The global issue of women’s safety is something that is very close to my heart. Through countless personal experiences and stories from loved ones, I have developed a sense of anger about this topic. What I still don’t see often enough is men being included in the conversation about women’s safety, even though men can help address this issue by being mindful of it, calling out their friends when necessary, or keeping an eye on someone’s safety. On my own social media, I constantly see posts on this topic that are negative toward men and aimed at a female audience. With this project, I want to show that men need to be included in the conversation about safety. I want to demonstrate how valuable it can be to share perspectives both the real-life experiences of women and men regarding this issue.
Artistic practice
Artistically, I’m curious to see how the combination of art and activism turns out and whether I’ll want to take on more similar projects in the future. Especially with this topic, I’d love to join an organization that creates creative projects around it. I believe that art is a powerful tool for addressing difficult topics; it’s more emotionally driven and can therefore help the viewer experience greater empathy. Furthermore, the subject becomes more accessible because art can have a soothing effect. In this project, I will explore this and continue to develop my artistic practice with imagery, music, and text.
Feminist research
Like it says in the book Feminist city: Claiming space in a man-made world (kent, 2020). Women are often expected to adapt their behavior in order to remain safe. Think about what to wear, where to be, how to behave, not be drunk etc. This research captures the lack of awareness and protection in this society as a whole. I want to understand how entitlement can result in harassment and where it comes from. The recognition and influence of objectification in our society and lastly, the harm caused by victim-blaming. Researching this will lead me to a better understanding of women’s safety issues and where it originates from.
I will also talk to women to gather personal stories that I can incorporate into my art. Real experiences and told in their own words so you can experience it through their eyes. In this project, I want to highlight the significant impact of this issue, and I do so by using a variety of stories and different languages to show that this is a global issue.
Literature research: Micro-society
In my literature research on artivism, the main question was when an art project becomes activist. According to the book Trust: Building on the Cultural Commons (2024) by Pascal Gielen, you can create a micro-society within your art when you create a social situation in which people can interact with one another differently or in new ways. Gielen describes an artivism project as something that engages the viewer, fosters interaction, and serves as a temporary space where new perspectives can be tested.
A “micro-society” means that you invite the audience to experience a new way of thinking and interacting through your art. In my project, I utilized artivism by creating a social space where men could reflect on their experiences with safety and respond to women’s stories. My goal is to encourage my audience to have more conversations about safety, and they see an example of having a conversation in the interviews with men.
My goal is to start a conversation about safety for women instead of seeing it as individual stories. I want to encourage men to talk about this subject so I'll include men and women in my work. My artwork becomes an example of a new social interaction on this subject.
Artistic research
Artistic research is important to this project because it demonstrates how my art is connected to the subject matter. Through experimentation, I will determine the form my project will take, one in which the art does not distract from the subject but rather enhances it. Peer feedback will allow me to test my impact. This will help me determine which form is most effective in fostering active audience engagement. Some desk research will be to find other artists that use this theme and analyze it. The experiment research consists of testing installations as well as testing visuals and music. I'll observe how the audience interacts with different forms of the installation and during class I'll get direct feedback from peers on the visuals and music
